Like many people around the world, I am horrified and overwhelmed by what is happening to our brothers and sisters in Ukraine. The gut wrenching images and heartbreaking stories move me to tears.
But I'm also heartened and inspired by the heroic acts of everyday people who are doing everything they can to save their country and its people.
The question that keeps coming back to me again and again is, "What can I do to help from miles and oceans away?"
With that in mind, I created an original piece of art, entitled "Broken Fragments in a World Turned Upside Down" in honor of the brave men, women, and children who are working so hard to preserve and reconstruct fragments of their former lives in what was a once-beautiful sovereign country.
For the mixed media project, I altered photographs I took of the mosaic tiles that adorn the Parc Güell in Barcelona, Spain. Many of the original tiles designed by famed architect and artist Antoni Gaudí, featured the yellow and blue colors of Ukraine's flag.
The order of the colors in my piece is upside down from how the colors appear in the Ukrainian flag to symbolize how the worlds of the Ukrainian people have been turned upside down.
I tore apart the images, symbolically thinking of how so many lives are being torn apart. Then I collaged the pieces back together in random designs as I thought of people all over the world who are risking their own lives to help the citizens of Ukraine piece their lives back together.
My hope is that my humble art project can benefit others. I will proudly donate 100% of the profits from the sales of these limited edition prints to Doctors Without Borders who are tirelessly providing medical humanitarian efforts in the crisis.
